American Sloane Stephens has won her first Grand Slam title.

The NBL is back at last and with round one in the books, it's time to assess each team and how they performed over the weekend.

There were some big results and big performances in an exciting round that has teased what the rest of the season will be like, with online betting sites and their championship odds beginning to take shape.

There's not much that separates each team at the moment as it is so early on in the season but there are some positive signs for some teams, and some alarm bells for other teams already.

Check down below to see our power rankings after week one of the NBL season.

10. Cairns Taipans

The Taipans struggled in their opening matchup, getting beaten 67-90 by the Perth Wildcats away from Perth.

It is worth noting that playing Perth away is no easy task, but after quarter time the Taipans were thoroughly outplayed.

Star point guard Scott Machado struggled with only four points, but forward Kouat Noi and guard Tahjere McCall played well with 17 and 16 points respectively.

The Taipans will need to improve greatly in order to get their first win on the board, and they'll get a good opportunity to do so when they face the new NBL club in the Tasmania Jackjumpers at home.

9. New Zealand Breakers

The Breakers were wiped off the park away from home by a far superior South East Melbourne side, going down 65-89.

The Breakers lost the game in the first half, finding themselves down 23-44 at half-time. From there the lead was too much to come back from as they weren't able to peg the margin back.

Forward Finn Delany was a shining light in otherwise a disappointing performance, putting in 18 points and nine rebounds.

A big weekend lies ahead for the Breakers, as they look to redeem themselves against the Phoenix again on Friday before travelling to Adelaide to face the 36ers on Sunday.

8. Adelaide 36ers

The 36ers had two losses from two games on the weekend, but they were against quality teams in the Perth Wildcats and Illawarra Hawks, and were competitive in both, so there are no alarm bells for Adelaide.

New recruit Mitch McCarron and veteran Daniel Johnson impressed over the weekend and will look to lead from the front as the 36ers look to get their first win next weekend.

Another double-header awaits the 36ers, travelling to Tasmania to face the Jackjumpers on Thursday night before travelling back home to play the New Zealand Breakers on Sunday.

7. Brisbane Bullets

The Bullets went down to the new NBL side in the Tasmania Jackjumpers down in Hobart on Friday night in overtime 74-83.

It was overall an underwhelming performance from the Bullets as they were expected to win and didn't come away with the chocolates.

It wasn't all doom and gloom for the Bullets as they were still competitive but seemed out of sync at times.

Star import Robert Franks impressed with 19 points and 11 rebounds, whilst Nathan Sobey chipped in 24 points and six rebounds.

The Bullets will get a chance to bounce back against Perth in Perth on Sunday which will be a tough challenge.

6. Tasmania Jackjumpers

The Jackjumpers weren't expected to win in their first-ever NBL game but they defied the odds to get the win in overtime over the Brisbane Bullets 83-74.

American import Josh Magette impressed with 19 points and six assists, whilst Josh Adams poured in 20 points and Will Magnay posted a double-double.

It is promising signs for the Jackjumpers and they'll look to back it up on Thursday night over the Adelaide 36ers at home before travelling to Cairns to face the Taipans on Saturday night.

5. Melbourne United

The reigning champions boast a strong squad this season with the addition of former NBA champion Matthew Dellavedova, but weren't able to get the win, losing to a strong Sydney Kings outfit 74-79.

There were no standouts for United, with the top scorer being Jo Lual-Acuil with 12 points, but they had an even spread of scoring.

The presence of star guard Chris Goulding and forward Jack White were missing but at full strength, United will still look to be contending for another championship.

They'll look to get their first win on the board against arch-rivals South East Melbourne Phoenix on Sunday.

4. Sydney Kings

The Sydney Kings earned a nice victory over the reigning champions Melbourne United on Sunday 79-74.

It was a well-rounded effort for the Kings with four players scoring in double figures and 10 players hitting the scoreboard which would've pleased head coach Chase Buford and the Kings fans.

New recruits RJ Hunter and Jaylen Adams impressed with 12 and 15 points each respectively.

The Kings have the Illawarra Hawks on Saturday night in what should be an exciting matchup.

3. South East Melbourne Phoenix

The South East Melbourne Phoenix boasted a 24-point victory over the New Zealand Breakers on Saturday night, starting what looks to be a promising campaign.

With a strong squad including Mitch Creek, Ryan Broekhoff and new Chinese import Zhou Qi who all played well in round one, the Breakers are touted to go far this season.

American import Xavier Munford was the standout however with 27 points in what could be a big season for the former NBA D-League All-Star.

The Phoenix face off in the first 'Throwdown' of the year against rivals Melbourne United on Sunday in what will be enthralling viewing.

2. Illawarra Hawks

Illawarra kicked off their campaign with a nice victory away from home, defeating Adelaide 81-71.

The sky is the limit for the Illawarra Hawks who have a good mix of youth and experience and have six-time NBL Coach of the Year Brian Goorjian at the helm.

With new star recruit and current Boomer Duop Reath who posted 18 points, as well as American imports in Tyler Harvey and Justinian Jessup who had 15 and 17 points respectively, the Hawks are spoilt for choice on who their go-to scorer can be.

The Hawks have a big matchup in week two against cross-town rivals in the Sydney Kings. Both teams coming off nice wins in what should be a must-watch.

1. Perth Wildcats

The Perth Wildcats were the main winners from round one.

Two nice wins with different players stepping up means the Wildcats will be hard to deal with this season.

Vic Law dominated on Friday night with 37 points in a 12-point victory over Adelaide, whilst Bryce Cotton dropped 31 points in a 23-point victory over Cairns on Sunday.

The Wildcats looked impressive and still have Todd Blanchfield and Mitch Norton to return from injury so they are in good stead to contend again.

The Wildcats face a Brisbane Bullets side on Sunday that will be hungry to redeem themselves following their opening-round loss.
